Jan 9 95 I propose we form a college-within-a-college. That means that about 20 faculty and 200 students (give or take) from all academic disciples all move their residences and offices to a certain part of campus (Prescott is obviously the best place because it has faculty offices, the Tavern, and classrooms). The faculty are no longer grouped by discipline, and they decide what to teach based on the needs of the students. Basically, it's like a little Johnston-college. Admissions office can of course still do admissions for the whole campus, but it can advertise two options: a serious living-learning, and a serious learning. (see the paper I wrote, off my home page somewhere, for more info). We don't need to keep the traditional class structures any more than we decide to. We have to have our own graduation requirements, decided on by us. The point is that we can decide a whole lot for ourselves, and that we do a whole lot for ourselves. I would suggest, of course, that *every* house do this, but there aren't that many people who are excited about the idea. It's totally outlandish, I know. The way to do it is to get a big donation of money from somebody who will pay for lots of neat things to happen 1) to have self-evaluation 2) to have faculty and student exchanges with other alternative colleges. We could even use just a PART of prescott, the important thing is that we have enough neat faculty to go around and that everybody who is in it is psyched about it, faculty and students. How do we go about it?
