At the Johnston Center, an individualized, internal degree-granting program within the University of Redlands, Redlands, California, students are required to write contracts for many of their courses. The best part of this plan is that teachers have to really listen to the students, and they get to find out when the students really don't want to do what an instructor thinks they want to do. The contract really says what a studnet intends to do, and what a student hopes the professor would do. Jan 15 92
