I think the advising process is fundamental to a successful Hampshire education. I am distressed that many faculty pay less attention to their advisees than those advisees deserve and require. I do not like the idea of the advising office keeping track of students. Therefore, I propose that advisors should write a paragraph for each studednt at the end of each semester. It should say what they have done, and what the student and advisor have figured out that that student's education is all about (tentatively). The advisor should keep first-year students' first-year forms. The reason for those forms is to have a discussion between the advisro and the student NOT to give the advising office a thing to hold over students' heads. Jan 15 95
