Independent and Directed Studies

Independent studies are studies with one student; directed studies are those that have more than one student but are less dependent on the instructor and have less meetings with the instructor than a class. Both require contracts by the students and narrative evaluations. Professors are generally unwilling to duplicate courses offered by the University or Johnston, or to sponsor independent studies where their expertise is too rudimentary to be able to evaluate the student.
