I wanted to briefly mention the folks who have been most instrumental in helping me write this paper. First of all, Marjetta Geerling, who began the whole exchange, drew me into her projects, has been full of enthusiasm throughout. Also on the Johnston side, Karl Swan, Matthew Fishman, Noah Wardrip-Fruin, Bill McDonald, and Yasuyuki Owada provided invaluable enthusiasm, recommendations about drafts of this paper, wonderful conversations, and helpful insight. At Hampshire, I would like to thank Mike Ford and Stan Warner, who were excited to work with me on a walk-in Division 1 Social Science exam, and have pushed me with a number of difficult questions; Herb Bernstein, who insisted that I write something -- anything -- because he feared I didn't know how, and who read a draft and insisted that I admit in the paper what I did not understand, rather than glossing over it; Tom Levitan, who, along with enthusiasm, has provided numerous conversations, references, and directions in which to go. I certainly thank the entire Johnston Community, who provided a wonderful home and family for a month, and Clemma and mod 52, which covered the rest of the year.
