This history of Johnson College and the Johnston Center [mine -- the one you are currently reading] is interesting in a number of ways. It is firstly interdicliplinary. I acknowledge the role of individuals making ideas and institutions, the role of ideas and institutions overpowering and informing individuals, and the continued and continuing interaction between history, community, psychology, pedagogy, feminism, and individual experience.[SEE FOOTNOTE] The story of Johnston is not linear, and a simple reading of this chapter in isolation will be incomplete. An understanding of the history must be informed by the ideas and traditions that make Johnston, ideas that are presented in the remainder of this report.
