Conclusion

The ideas I have presented in this chapter are the tools I use to understand why education does and does not work. They are still developing in my mind, and I think they will always continue to. It seems, after all, that with time any idea has a tendency to be outrun by the world - revealing how the literal idea is inappropriate in the new situation, but also - if we are observant enough - a glimpse of existence's deeper, unrecordable, eternal tendencies.

Meanwhile, in the present arrangement of this division III, the next chapter provides some of my reflections at the end of a semester of trying to make my ideas for education work at Hampshire College. Reality, as one might expect, is more complex than the theories, but not so much that they are not helpful. Learning will always contain some mystery we can never capture but which can carry us along when we allow it.
